“Sharing a passion for exploring transformations of urban visual environment, we came to the idea of making this film about Hong Kong, as an archetype of many other cities in global capitalism. Making Many Undulating Things has profoundly sharpened our perceptions on history of spatial formation in the modern world and rendered us opportunities to make experiments on cinematic expressions on the topic. As the title of our film suggests, there are many things - human body and experiences, histories, fragments of visual representations - that have been experiencing undulations in time and space, leaving seemingly unconnected beads on the shore of time. We try to string them back together both visually and acoustically in this film. We consider the notion of human body central to the exploration of spatial politics. In early colonial era, bodies of native Chinese were considered inferior and close to the degenerate environment, thus spatial segregation were created to protect the Europeans. In the logistic world, we see how workers’ bodies are both alienated and employed to seal the maximum efficiency of global trade. In the developed urban centers, the engineering of constant temperature and cool air reconfigures the boundaries between public domains and the corporate territories of profit. In the extreme case of disparity, we also see how human bodies being literally “caged”, by the strains of housing prices, land policy and free market economy.” -Artist’s statement
